There is a great variety of sporting events held in Cancun. The top three professional sports in Cancun are baseball, soccer and basketball, but there are also many other sporting events held in Cancun, such as the PGA golf championships, major boxing events, big name wrestling, bullfighting and much more….
Here is an overview of when and where you can watch the various sports and where to get tickets.

Baseball: Tigres de Quintana Roo

The Tigres of Quintana Roo are the local baseball team and the first home game of the Season will be played on the 26th March at the Beto Avila Stadium in Downtown Cancun. The teams will play a total of 107 games in the season, which ends on 30th July 2009.
Cancun is hosting the ‘Juego de Estrellas 2009’ which will attract all the best teams from the Mexican baseball league.
Monday – Friday games are played at 8.00 pm and Saturday and Sunday they are at 6.00 pm.

First Division Soccer: Atlante de Quintana Roo (Potros de Hierro)

Atlante are now the local 1st Division team and have built up a large following since moving to Cancun 2 years ago. The atmosphere at the games is electric and very safe and fun for families – well worth a visit.
The Mexican league has two seasons and they have just begun their closing season for 2009 on the 16th January. This will run until the 31st May 2009. Most games are played at the weekends in the evening but you will need to check their website for more information: www.club-atlante.com .
The Andres Quintana Roo is their home stadium and is in Downtown Cancun, right next to the baseball stadium.
You can buy tickets at their ticket office at the stadium.

Basketball: Pioneros de Quintana Roo

The Poliforum Cancun is the home to the Pioneros de Quintana Roo, Cancun’s local basketball team. The stadium holds up to 5,000 people and has first class facilities for all.
The Pioneros de Quintana Roo began 3 years ago and are now doing well both in the South-East Mexico league and also in the Mexican national league.

Wrestling in Cancun

Wrestling matches are great fun for all the family and Cancun attracts many of the Mexican big name wrestlers such as El Mistico, El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, Cibernetico and many more. Check here on our website for more information on coming events. The home of Cancun wrestling is in Downtown Cancun at the Cancun Plaza de Toros.
Tickets can be bought directly at the ticket office at the Plaza de Toros in Downtown Cancun.

Bullfights in Cancun

There is a bullfight on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm at the Plaza de Toros Cancun. Tickets can be bought directly at the ticket office or you can ask your concierge at your hotel for more information.
Occasionally there are big name bullfighters from Spain and Mexico. These attract a large crowd and the atmosphere is fantastic! These special ‘corridas’ are normally held at the weekend in the evening. You will have to book your ticket in advance, as they are very popular.

Mayakoba Golf Classic 2009

This is the only PGA tour held in Mexico and will be held in the beautiful Mayakoba for the third consecutive year. The tournament will run from the 26th February to the 1st March 2009 and will attract 132 top golf professionals each vying for the prize of 3.6 million dollars!

Polo in Cancun

El Rey is the first outdoor polo field in the Mexican Caribbean, and can be found just 25 miles south of Cancun in Puerto Morelos. It is located in the middle of the jungle and only ten minutes away from the beach.
The Polo Season is from the 11th November to 30th June, which is the best time to combine it with a fantastic Cancun vacation. The public is welcome to come and watch this fast and exciting game, and it is free to be a spectator if you would like to experience a Polo Match or Tournament. 

Fishing Tournament in Puerto Morelos

Each year in June there is a fishing tournament held in Puerto Morelos.
