Visitors to Cancun Mexico need to remember that tap water is not for drinking! The only drinking water comes from sealed “purified water” bottles that you will find in all the hotels and restaurants in the tourist areas. Ice served in beverages at most dining establishments and resorts is also made from purified water.

In the hot tropics, it’s necessary to drink lots of plain water to stay hydrated. Aim for at least two liters a day – and more if you’re out in the sun and being active – to keep in top form. Do not hesitate to ask for a glass of purified water "Agua Purificada" or a bottled water (“botella de agua”) wherever you have your meals. Stick to fruits and vegetables that can be peeled or disinfected in bactericide soak. As an extra precaution, avoid salad that has not been properly washed. 

Don’t underestimate the power of the hot Cancun sun. Wear sunscreen with SPF 30+ and stay covered up during the hottest times of the day, between 10 am and 4 pm. Remember to reapply sunscreen often, especially if swimming in the ocean or pool, or sweating. A sunhat and UVB protected sunglasses are also important. If you do get burned, apply aloe lotion and drink plenty of fluids.

Another common mistake made by many travelers is to overindulge, in both food and drink. If you consume alcoholic beverages in the tropical climate of Cancun, don’t forget to rehydrate accordingly. A smart rule of thumb is to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink to minimize dehydration. Despite precautions, if “Montezuma’s revenge” does strike, it’s a good idea to carry Imodium tablets to ease discomfort and prevent further dehydration.
